Tuesday, August 20, 2013: Regular meeting at the Mayville VFW.
Meet the candidates:
• Larry Barmore
• Ed Carutis
• Fred Croscut
• Dave Himelein
All were given the opportunity to talk with those present. A back and forth that got pretty serious at a couple points (like actively belonging to the NRA or SCOPE).
Larry Barmore made the best reasons for selling the County Home:
• If not sold, it will eventually be forced to close and no one will be working or being cared for there. Decreasing state funding is behind this. There are 30 other counties in New York State with County Homes up for sale for the same reasons. Right now it is a buyers market.
Larry Barmore also discussed re-powering the Dunkirk plant:
• NRG in Dunkirk was recently upgraded to stop the fly ash for about $200,000,000. National Grid is now owned by a company in Great Britain. It was purchased from Niagara Mohawk. NRG is not National Grid. If allowed to close, we will lose $8,000,000 per year. Re-powering it to natural gas would provide construction jobs for about three years. It would also prevent the local economy from having to purchase power from other areas at a much higher price.
Business discussed:
• Sid: Your vote is what we need.
• We have sold three times as many signs as we have members. Why?
• Ideas: each sign should have a membership folder or a bag of literature with it.
• About one-half the vote of registered voters.
