Regular Meeting: Assemblyman Andy Goodell guest speaker

Tuesday, November 19, 2013: Regular meeting at the VFW in Mayville.
New York State Assemblyman Andy Goodell was in attendance and ready to go so we gave him the floor at 7:05 pm and he spoke with us until 8:06 pm. We conducted our business afterwards.
Andy Goodell:
SAFE Act update:
• OK for Law Enforcement.
• Allow retired to carry, but only 7 rounds.
• January 15, 2014 Background check required just to purchase ammo. This has been delayed since the software is not ready. No idea how long that will take.
• April 15, 2014 is deadline for Assault Rifle Registration.
• Need a follow-up rally in Albany late march or early April.
• Prohibition of transfer of a weapon.
• Must be transferred out of state or must surrender it to police.
• Make sure correctly registered and in all names by April 15th.
Lawsuits: couple decided
• Robert Shults (Engineer) lawsuit: not in compliance with three day waiting period. Cuomo had instituted statement of necessity. Lawsuit was thrown out.
• Four people brought a lawsuit without a lawyer challenging all penal law claiming no statute is valid. Waived procedural requirements and got tossed.
• SCOPE lawsuit is in the works.
• Three of the four problems need constitutional lawyers.
• All assault weapons grandfathered in and now I want to buy one. Only grandfathers in NY people.
• Cannot take without compensation.
• Commerce Clause: One state cannot create laws that interfere in commerce between two states. Interstate commerce 1,000,000 still have guns.
Get the county to pass a resolution to leave New York State and join Pennsylvania !!!
• Three gun suit left and one on the fence.
• Lawsuits regarding the registration and the transfer of weapons and the two best chances against the SAFE Act.
Andy ended at 8:06 pm.
Business discussed:
Treasurer:
• Signs:
• Out of the last 250 signs.
• 65 out in business locations.
• 45 in stock.
Business discussed:
• SCOPE membership has increased 6X the original numbers.
• Six more counties have chapters started.
• Discussion regarding sign prices and should we order more.
• Stay at $10 Donation for signs, but be willing to accept less as long as we cover our cost. For example somebody only has $7 in their pocket, take it and give them a sign but keep it quiet. We will be ordering 250 more yard signs.
• Another rifle raffle?
• Chautauqua County Sportsman’s Federation meetings are the 3rd or 4th Wednesday of every month. Should we try to get to them to increase our membership and yard sign sales?
• Discussed Lifetime Licenses via the Federation. Will get more information on costs.
Sid Compton adjourned the meeting at 8:47 pm.

Regular Meeting: meet the candidates: Larry Barmore, Ed Carutis, Fred Croscut, Dave Himelein guest speakers

Tuesday, August 20, 2013: Regular meeting at the Mayville VFW.
Meet the candidates:
• Larry Barmore
• Ed Carutis
• Fred Croscut
• Dave Himelein
All were given the opportunity to talk with those present. A back and forth that got pretty serious at a couple points (like actively belonging to the NRA or SCOPE).
Larry Barmore made the best reasons for selling the County Home:
• If not sold, it will eventually be forced to close and no one will be working or being cared for there. Decreasing state funding is behind this. There are 30 other counties in New York State with County Homes up for sale for the same reasons. Right now it is a buyers market.
Larry Barmore also discussed re-powering the Dunkirk plant:
• NRG in Dunkirk was recently upgraded to stop the fly ash for about $200,000,000. National Grid is now owned by a company in Great Britain. It was purchased from Niagara Mohawk. NRG is not National Grid. If allowed to close, we will lose $8,000,000 per year. Re-powering it to natural gas would provide construction jobs for about three years. It would also prevent the local economy from having to purchase power from other areas at a much higher price.
Business discussed:
• Sid: Your vote is what we need.
• We have sold three times as many signs as we have members. Why?
• Ideas: each sign should have a membership folder or a bag of literature with it.
• About one-half the vote of registered voters.
